Must See: God Bless America

Today we highlight God Bless America, a crucial Must See film for any moviegoer with a dark sense of humor. With a title like God Bless America you might be expecting a Michael Moore film about the American views on religion, and while not completely off base I assure you this movie is much better than a Moore documentary. Dont get me wrong, I like Mr. Moore, but his stuff is an attempt at enlightened shock factors whereas God Bless America is a flick more along the lines of  cheeky Bonnie and Clyde against our ever more idiotic society here in the good old U.S. of A.

Thinning the Herd

God Bless America is a comedy unlike most. Where the average film shys away from the truth this points a gun at its face. Terminally ill Frank and his 16 year old side kick Roxy are on a mission to kill off the human beings that are helping to turn our society into a cesspool of stupidities whores. I could go on but Frank says it best.

”My name is Frank. That’s not important. The important question is: who are you? America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dumbest, the meanest and the loudest. We no longer have any common sense of decency. No sense of shame. There is no right and wrong. The worst qualities in people are looked up to and celebrated. Lying and spreading fear is fine as long as you make money doing it. We’ve become a nation of slogan-saying, bile-spewing hatemongers. We’ve lost our kindness. We’ve lost our soul. What have we become? We take the weakest in our society, we hold them up to be ridiculed, laughed at for our sport and entertainment. Laughed at to the point, where they would literally rather kill themselves than live with us anymore.”

During the course of the film Frank and Roxy knock everyone from Diablo Cody to whiny spoiled teenage rich girls down a peg and sometimes they kill ‘em instead. Being someone that despises what my country has become I loved this movie when just the concept of it was brought to my attention, but I knew it would be worth spreading to the world when just a few minutes in Frank dreams about slaughtering his stupid brony neighbor and his screaming kid that Frank likens to an air raid siren.

Frank: I only wanna kill people who deserve to die.

Bobcat

Before I say this directors name and you think up some Family Guy joke, let me first remind you of the tv shows under his belt: Crank Yankers, The Man Show, Chappelle’s Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Important Things with Demetri Martin. Who is this man? Bobcat Goldthwait.

Joke all you want but this guys repertoire of crass, politically incorrect humor has helped develop some iconic television programs.  But what about his showing on the big screen? Well, unfortunately its not been that great and God Bless America is no different grossing just $120,000 over 15 theaters since its release in May. However a cult following is building up over the digital release.

Must See

Every film fan, especially Americans, needs to see this movie for a number of reasons. Primarily its just funny, if you enjoy dark humor this is your flick. But its also honest and sweeping. God Bless America puts a spotlight on the drek of the nation in a way that no one else would. And better yet its protagonists, while well meant, are not black and white characters. They preach that our nation is filled with hate yet they go around killing those that they hate, they have grey areas in their logic. But they are complex, filled with rage towards society yet not simply mad men with guns. They are intelligent and well spoken, as much aware of themselves as they are of others and the relationship between the two is one that feels real, and not written.

Roxy: So you can kill a teenager, just not fuck one?
Frank: Yeah.

God Bless America is a smart movie, with well written dialogue, lovable characters, and a “Frank” message for everyone to hear. Hopefully after this article you’ll see the film and agree.

“Must” is part of a collection of articles at GTMAM honoring the Must Play games, the Must See movies and shows as well as the Must Hear music. The hope is that these posts will introduce readers to new things that we feel everyone should know about.
